Per Diem is a term meaning "per day." Per diem rates are those paid to employees and business people who travel, for meals and other daily expenses. Sometimes these expenses are termed, "per diems."
Per diem rates allowed by the IRS are detailed in Publication 1542; these rates are shown for most major U.S. cities and they are updated periodically by the IRS.
