Fraudulent Emails from NACHA

By , About.com GuideMay 16, 2011

Follow me on:

Another email scam, like the ones a while back purporting to be from EFTPS (the Federal Electronic Payment System). This time, the fraudulent emails are from the NACHA, the National Electronic Payments Association.  The email I just received was sent to my About.com email, from which I don't ever send money, so I knew it was a scam. The email had an authentic-looking NACHA logo and it said:

The ACH transaction (ID: 203180639507), recently sent from your bank account (by you or any other person), was canceled by the Electronic Payments Association.

Rejected transfer
Transaction ID:    203180639507
Reason of rejection    See details in the report below
Transaction Report   (file name deleted by me).pdf.exe (self-extracting archive, Adobe PDF)

NACHA has an article on its website about this email scam. They state: "These emails vary in content and appear to be transmitted from email addresses associated with the NACHA domain (@nacha.org). Some bear the name of fictitious NACHA employees and/or departments. NACHA itself does not process nor touch the ACH transactions that flow to and from organizations and financial institutions. NACHA does not send communications to persons or organizations about individual ACH transactions that they originate or receive."

If you receive a suspicious email from NACHA, forward it to them at abuse.nacha.org

And DON'T OPEN the file in the email!
