Definition:
A variance is an exception to a zoning restriction which allows use of the land outside the requirements of the zoning for that area. Variances can be given by a locality for businesses who present valid reasons for the variance and who can show that the variance will not lessen property values or interfere with use of the property by current residents.
In some cases, you may have to go before the city council or municipal government and plead your case. You may also need to poll the neighbors to be sure they don't object to your variance.
Examples:
For example, if you want to have a business in your home, you may need to request a variance if your home is in a residential area.
