Par Value

By , About.com Guide

Definition:

The par value of a share of stock is the initial value at the beginning of the corporation; it is usually $1. Changes in stock prices reflect difference between the market price and par value; a "premium" if market price is above par; a "discount" if market price is below par. Market price is not applicable for a closely held private company.
