Definition:

A DUNS number (for Data Universal Numbering System) is a unique identifier for businesses. DUNS numbers are assigned and maintained by Dun & Bradstreet (D&B) and are used for a variety of purposes, including establishing business credit, applying for government contracting opportunities, and giving potential customers a way to view your payment history. Some uses of the DUNS system are to see a business's fictitious names (trade names) and to view the relationship between subsidiary companies and a holding company or parent company.

You can apply for a DUNS number for your business at https://eupdate.dnb.com/requestoptions.asp?cm_re=HomepageB*Resources*DUNSNumberLink or if you wish to establish your company as a government contractor, apply for your DUNS number using this link: http://fedgov.dnb.com/webform/CCRSearch.do
