How to Enroll in EFTPS and How to Use EFTPS to Pay Business Taxes


The electronic federtax payment system (EFTPS) was set up to allow businesses and iduals to make federal tax payments directly using an online system.  Beginning January 1, 2011, tax payments for businesses may not be made using the old Form 8109 federal tax coupon, but must be made using the EFTPS.  Here is information about this system, including how to register, how the system works, and which taxes you can pay with EFTPS.

The Electronic Federal Tax Payment System (EFTPS) is an online federal tax payment system that allows you to pay business taxes online. Individuals can use EFTPS to pay estimated taxes and businesses can use the system to pay federal employment and corporate taxes. Tax payments can be made online or by phone through EFTPS.

5. What's the Difference Between EFTPS and E-File?

There seems to be some confusion among business owners about the difference betwwen EFTPS and E-File.  EFTPS is for business tax payments, while E-file is the IRS acceptance of electronically filed tax returns, either those submitted by tax preparers or through tax preparation software.
