Did You Know You Can File Payroll Taxes Electronically?

Monday February 4, 2008

The IRS has a list of e-file providers you can use to file payroll taxes and other federal business taxes online. The IRS says this list is "approved" but it does not endorse any of these providers. Still, this might be a place to start if you are considering e-filing. Some of these providers allow you to file a limited number of free forms. For example, one provider allows you to file up to 5 1099s for free.

I tried one of the free online services (I had only 2 1099s) and I found it to be pretty easy. One suggestion: Get all the information you need, like company identifier (SSN or EIN), mailing addresses, and email addresses together before you start the process, so you don't have to fumble around.

You can also e-file your W-2 and W-3 directly with the Social Security Administration through their Businesses Services website.
